In a statement issued on Saturday, July 9, 2022, by the Spanish Ministry of Interior, the day after the meeting that took place Friday in Rabat, with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, and the Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, Fernando Grande-Marlaska expressed the firm commitment of Madrid to cooperate with the Kingdom following the recent massive attempt to enter Melilla.
“I reiterate once again the commitment of Spain to continue to collaborate with countries of origin and transit, especially with Morocco, which is doing an important job and must be recognized as such,” said the Spanish minister.
He welcomed the agreements reached at the meeting in Rabat, and said that this commitment “shows that we continue to work together” to face the challenges of illegal immigration.
Recalling the “violent” attack of June 24, he expressed Spain’s “determination” to deepen the management of irregular migration and to fight firmly against criminal organizations that use violence and migrants to achieve their illegal objectives.
“We will continue to work in depth to put in place the necessary and accurate means to save the lives that are endangered by criminal mafias, and we will continue on the path of cooperation between Morocco and the EU, in order to deal firmly with irregular immigration,” he noted.
