Morocco: Nearly 3 out of 10 unemployed are young people

According to this note, nearly 3 out of 4 unemployed youth (75.8%) live in urban areas (67.3% are men and 90.1% are graduates).

The unemployment rate has reached 31.8% for young people aged 15 to 24 years at the national level, against 13.7% for people aged 25 to 44 years and 3.8% for people aged 45 years or more, says the same source.

The unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 with a higher education diploma is 61.2 percent. It is 30.4 percent for young people with a middle-level degree and 12.9 percent for those with no degree.

The youth unemployment rate is more prevalent in urban areas and among young women. It peaks at 46.7 percent in urban areas and 15.9 percent in rural areas. The unemployment rate for young women is 13 percentage points higher than for men (41.9 percent versus 28.4 percent).

The increase in the unemployment rate is more pronounced among young people. Between 2019 and 2021, this rate increased by 6.9 points compared to 3.1 points for the entire working population.
The HCP also points out that youth unemployment is a long-term unemployment and first insertion. Indeed, 70.4% of unemployed youth have been unemployed for a year or more, and nearly three quarters have never worked (73.4%).
