European Union: A staggering increase in the number of irregular entries of migrants

While these entries are more numerous from the Balkan route, they are also important from the Mediterranean. In total, 6,434 irregular entries were detected in the western Mediterranean, 25% less than last year, Frontex said.

The main nationalities present on this route were migrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey. The central Mediterranean route was used by more than 42,500 migrants, between January and July 2022, an increase of 44% compared to the first seven months of last year.

The number of detections on the eastern Mediterranean route also remained high with 22,601 arrivals, “more than double” compared to last year. The number of arrivals in Cyprus accounted for more than half of the total number of detections, with most of the migrants coming from Syria, Nigeria and Congo.

On the western Mediterranean route, 6,434 irregular border crossings were detected, this time down 25% from last year.
