Exports of tomatoes : Morocco is close to Spain in the world ranking

Morocco’s tomato exports have increased significantly, from 44.81 million kilograms in 2012 to 629.51 million kilograms in 2021, according to Comtrade (the world’s largest repository of international trade data).

Morocco is therefore considered the fourth largest exporter of tomatoes in the world, just behind Spain which occupies the third position in this ranking.

The strong pace of Moroccan exports should allow Morocco to overtake its northern neighbor to take third place. Over the
past decade, Moroccan exports of tomatoes have increased by 41.84%, while Spanish exports of tomatoes have decreased by 10.19%.

According to Comtrade
data, Morocco in 2021 accounted for more than 8.10% of world exports, while Spain accounted for nearly 8.53% of the exportable supply at the global level. Thus, Morocco continues its strong growth in the tomato market, in 2021, the Spanish production was 5.24% higher than the Moroccan production. In 2022, Morocco will be able, for the first time in history, to overtake the Spanish.

In the global ranking, Mexico stands out with 24.51% of exports, followed by the Netherlands with 12.02%, Spain and Morocco.
