The Provincial Directorate of Culture in Essaouira has concocted a rich and varied program for the celebration of the “month of heritage” of this ancient city, with a panoply of events and cultural and artistic activities.
Initiated under the theme “The Heritage of the region, preservation and accessibility”, this event, which continues until May 18, tends to shed light and enhance the secular and diverse legacy of Essaouira, the ultimate goal is to preserve the richness of this heritage and ensure its transmission to future generations.
On the menu of this event, initiated in partnership with the provincial and communal councils of the city, a series of conferences and debates led by specialists and experts, including “spaces for the preservation of memory”, “archaeology and heritage”, “architectural heritage”, “Rzoune in perspective of development”, “intangible heritage of Essaouira in its environment” and “Ida Ougard’s sugar mills: from the highlight to the preservation and development.
The program also includes open days and guided tours to various sites and historical monuments which abound in the city for the benefit of students from schools (Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum, Sqala of the port, Bayt Dakira, El Menzah Gallery, Sugar Ida Ougard), in addition to a training session on “archaeological heritage: definition, enhancement and preservation”, awareness campaigns on the importance of the heritage of the ancient medina, in coordination with local civil society associations, as well as exhibitions of plastic arts and photography with the central theme of the heritage of the city.
Also on the menu is an artistic evening animated by local troops of Gnaoua, Aïssaoua and Hmadcha, initiated as part of activities recently organized in the city on the occasion of the celebration of spring and music (27-30 April), and the screening of a documentary film on the cave Bizmoune, in the province of Essaouira, for the enhancement of the discovery in this archaeological site of elements of adornment highlighting the oldest symbolic human behavior.
The closing ceremony will be marked by the celebration of the consecration of the Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum, which has just won the third prize for museum orientation.
