Plant-Based Cooking: How to Make Tofu Taste Great

Tofu is full of things that are believed to be good for your body. But if you’re new to cooking with it, you might not think it has much flavor.

Here are some things you can try to make your tofu taste great!

Press it

Tofu is usually packaged in water. If it’s firm tofu, the water could stop it from getting crispy and from absorbing new flavors.

The best thing to do is press the water out. You can use something called a tofu press, but if you don’t have one, just cover the tofu with a paper towel and put something heavy on top of it, like a pan with a bowl of fruit on top. Leave it for 30 minutes to an hour.

Marinate it

One of the easiest ways to add flavor to your tofu is to marinate it — the tofu will absorb the taste of most ingredients, so don’t be afraid to try different sauces!

For Asian flavors, for example, you can marinate your tofu using things like soy sauce and rice vinegar. For Mexican flavors, use things like paprika, oregano and lime.

Try not to use oil in your marinade, because it could cover the outside of the tofu and stop it from absorbing the flavors.

Tofu also doesn’t need to be marinated for as long as meat — even half an hour is enough!

Make it crispy

Cornstarch will make your tofu crispy and will also make it easier to get it off the pan. An easy way to make sure all your tofu pieces are covered is to put them in a bag or box with some cornstarch and shake well.

To make them extra crispy, put your cornstarch-covered tofu pieces in milk — you can also use nut milk — and then cover them in breadcrumbs.
