Morocco has 29,180 public and private doctors

By 2022, the number of doctors in the public sector will have risen to 13,228, compared with 15,952 in the private sector. The Casablanca-Settat and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra regions concentrate a total of 14,758 doctors in both sectors.

Morocco’s healthcare system continues to suffer from a crying shortage of medical professionals. According to data published by the Haut-Commissariat au Plan (HCP) in the 2023 edition of “Le Maroc en chiffres”, there will be 15,952 doctors in the private sector and 13,228 in the public sector by 2022. As a result, Morocco will have a total of 29,180 doctors in the public and private sectors. For a population of 37 million, the ratio is less than 8 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants, whereas the World Health Organization (WHO) standard is 15.3 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants. Regional breakdown shows that medical professionals in the public and private sectors are concentrated mainly in the Casablanca-Settat and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra regions. In the Casablanca-Settat region, the number of private-sector doctors will reach 5,494 by 2022, compared with 2,732 in the public sector. In detail, Casablanca alone will have 4,137 doctors in private practice and 2,053 in public practice. The Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region has 3,313 private practitioners and 3,219 public practitioners. For the city of Rabat, data show 1,475 doctors in the private sector and 2,318 in the public sector. The Fès-Meknès region comes next, with a total of 3,401 doctors, including 1,480 in the private sector and 1,921 in the public sector; Marrakech-Safi, with 3,115 doctors, including 1,692 in the private sector and 1,423 in the public sector; and the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, with 2,342 doctors, including 1,378 in the public sector.342 doctors (1378 in private practice and 964 in public practice); Fès-Meknès 2,290 doctors; Oriental 1,923 doctors (752 in private practice and 1,171 in public practice); Souss-Massa 1,521 doctors (899 in private practice and 622 in public practice). On the other hand, the medical profession is much less present in the regions of Beni Mellal-Khénifra (1,078 doctors in the public and private sectors) and Draâ-Tafilalet (521 doctors)
