Ajax: A Hard Blow for Hakim Ziyech

Ajax just announced it. Hakim Ziyech will be absent for several weeks “due to a torn calf muscle”. Although the length of his absence has not been specified, it is certain that the Moroccan international will not play in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the Europa League, scheduled for 20 February in Getafe.

Two weeks ago, Hakim Ziyech was injured in a league match against Sparta Rotterdam. The injury came at a bad time for the midfielder, who was being courted by several European clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham and Bayern.

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars’s latest statement suggested that the Moroccan international might leave his club sooner than expected: “I often thought he had reached his best level. But every year he is progressing and moving forward…I have told him several times that he could become ‘Mr Ajax’ and has no reason to leave…but in reality, Hakim is 26 years old, and his level is very good…If he wants to go one step further, we will have to accept his choices,” he told De Telegraaf, opening the door to Ziyech.

The Moroccan has definitely made history in Dutch football. The Ajax midfielder was voted “best player of the year” at the Sports Gala Amsterdam 2019, following his superb season with his club.
