Unemployment affects women more than men, with unemployment rates of 13.5 per cent and 7.8 per cent respectively, according to the Office of the High Commissioner for Planning (HCP).

In the cities, the unemployment rate for women is more than double that of men, at 21.8% and 10.3% respectively, according to the HCP in an information note on the situation of women in the labor market, published on the occasion of International Women’s Day (08 March).

This note also highlights that the volume of unemployed women stands at 388,000 people, or 35% of the overall volume of unemployment, while nearly 8 out of 10 unemployed women (82.6%) are under 35 years old and about 9 out of 10 (88.1%) are graduates.

Analysis of the profile of unemployed women also reveals that three-quarters of them (75.9% compared to 63.5% for men) have been unemployed for more than a year and 69% are first-time jobseekers (compared to 50.9% for men).
