The delegated ministry in charge of Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) announced on Friday its decision to cover the funeral expenses of the deceased Moroccans who are in need and who do not have a Muslim funeral insurance in the host countries, given the repercussions of preventive measures taken by several countries to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and the inability to repatriate the remains of Moroccans who died abroad for burial in Morocco.
Morocco’s diplomatic representations and consular centers abroad will ensure the implementation of this decision, in coordination with the families of the deceased according to specific criteria and formalities, the ministry said in a statement.
“This new measure aims at adapting the mechanism of repatriation of remains, managed by the delegated ministry, to the current conditions, in order to provide all the support to Moroccans living abroad and their families during this particular situation which requires everyone to show a spirit of citizenship, responsibility, solidarity and understanding,” the same source added.
The Ministry stated that it was making efforts to ensure the transfer of remains to the national territory in full coordination with the Kingdom’s diplomatic representations and consular centers abroad, according to a program targeting Moroccans residing abroad who are in a precarious situation and who do not have body repatriation insurance, aged one year and over.
In this connection, he noted the strong mobilization and considerable and continuous efforts of all diplomatic representations and consular centers in host countries to monitor the situation of the Moroccan community abroad during this particular situation.
The Ministry commended all components of civil society of Moroccans around the world and, moreover, all Moroccans residing abroad for “their attachment to authentic Moroccan values, namely commitment and solidarity, through many important and honorable initiatives in the host countries”.
