Travel Agencies on the Verge of Bankruptcy

The Moroccan travel agencies are currently on their nerves because of the delay of the Ministry of Tourism in responding to the proposals and requests which were presented during a previous meeting, with a view to saving the sector and to finding a way out of the great gloom which has hit it since the spread of Covid-19.

Indeed, many agencies have called upon the government and the supervisory ministry to save them from bankruptcy and save their employees from the unemployment that threatens them. The situation of the travel agencies is all the more critical since the deadline for receiving support from the “Covid-19” fund expires at the end of June.

This is one of the reasons why these agencies have requested an extension of the period during which they could benefit from the support, until next December, just as they have asked to be exempted from taxes, since they have been inactive for the last four months.

The travel agencies are now in a catastrophic situation, given the lack of a vision for the future of the sector and the Ministry’s silence on their legitimate and realistic complaints. Their situation is all the more serious as they were already suffering from unfair competition perpetrated by unauthorized agencies and travel organizers on social media, in addition to the foreign sites that were selling the Moroccan tourist destination.

At a time when the opening of borders is still not confirmed, these agencies will have to be satisfied with domestic tourism, which also suffers from problems such as the low purchasing power of Moroccans.

The crisis of the travel agencies has been further aggravated following the cancellation by Saudi Arabia of the Umrah and the Hajj which represent two highly demanded activities by the Moroccan customers.
