On Friday, the European Commission welcomed Morocco’s exemplary management of the Covid-19 health crisis.
“Morocco is not only an important neighbor, but also a firm and trustworthy partner that has acted decisively to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” stressed Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement.
” Under these circumstances, and using the considerable flexibility offered by the existing financial rules, the Commission has chosen to use €450 million of the funds already allocated to Morocco to cover short-term emergency needs and possible impacts on Moroccan society and the economy,” the Commissioner said in response to a question from an MEP on the appropriateness of this support for the Kingdom.
According to the senior European official, the European Commission is standing in solidarity with the rest of the world in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, “because the battle to defeat the virus domestically can only succeed if the virus is defeated globally”.
