The works council, scheduled to be held in accordance with Article 66 of the Labour Code to examine the crisis exit plan, was transformed into an information meeting, following the mutual agreement between RAM management and representatives of the trade union office of the National Air Transport Federation (FNTA) and employee delegates.
“We have reminded everyone that the holding of a works council requires that we be provided with all the documents and information necessary for a constructive debate,” reads a news flash broadcast by the union office of the FNTA, affiliated to the UMT.
During this meeting, the RAM CEO suggested that a draft social plan will be detailed in the coming days, mentioning the scenario of a reduction of 858 jobs, all categories combined, a reduction of the fleet, the closure of some representations. Addou also raised the possibility of a voluntary departure plan for staff over 57 years of age, with 15 years’ experience, and who are subject to the approval of their superiors. The terms of this plan are still under negotiation, it is stated on the UMT side.
According to our sources, one of the scenarios discussed at this information meeting is to lay off 30% of the technical crew (around 180 pilots), 30% of the commercial crew (hostesses and stewards) and only 13% of the ground staff, not counting job cuts at the various branches (RAM Handling, etc.).
Finally, with regard to the reduction of the aircraft fleet, the CEO of the national airline mentioned the possibility of selling some 20 aircraft, including 4 Embraer, 4 Dreamliner 787s and a dozen B737s. As a reminder, RAM’s aircraft fleet currently comprises 59 aircraft including thirty-seven B737, two B737 Max (immobilized since the crash of Ethiopian Airlines in March 2019), one B767 Cargo (dedicated to air freight), nine B787, four Embraer 190 and six ATR 72-212A.
