Israel-Morocco: civil society takes action to strengthen ties between the two peoples

Launched in the aftermath of the agreements between Morocco and Israel, Leaders Of Tomorrow is an innovation hackathon that aims to ensure the translation of these agreements on the ground and among the young generations of both peoples by moving from dialogue between states to dialogue between peoples. To this end, 20 young Moroccans and 20 Israelis have been selected to participate in this innovation hackathon, reads a joint statement.

This event starts with a virtual stage between December 2021 and February 2022, where it is about getting to know each other, breaking the ice, discussing stereotypes and perceptions, and forming 4 mixed working groups. This stage ended with a presentation of the project ideas in front of an Israeli-Moroccan jury.

The programme then included a face-to-face stage made possible by the reopening of the borders and the new Tel Aviv-Marrakesh air route where the Israeli delegation visited Morocco from 25 to 27 February 2022. The participants met for the first time live. It was an emotional moment as for many of them it was the first time they met an Israeli or a Moroccan.

Following the ice-breaking and cultural activities, including a visit to the Slat El Azama synagogue and an evening hosted by Moroccan artists Maxime Karoutchi, Fahd Mouftakhir and Françoise Atlan and Israeli artist Miri Mesika, it was time to deepen the projects with the aim of arriving at a “Viable Project” with a scalable budget of 1000 US dollars. This stage ended with a presentation to a jury.

The Leaders Of Tomorrow programme will end in May 2022. Until then, virtual sessions between the working groups will continue to make the projects as concrete and viable as possible in order to be able to realise a “Minimum Viable Project” on the ground in Israel when the Moroccan delegation travels in spring 2022. The four projects revolve around: engaged tourism, influence on social networks, artistic exchange and people with special needs, the statement said, stressing that the highlight of the visit will be a pitch to Isaac Herzog, President of the State of Israel.
