Drop in Spanish services exports to Morocco between 2019 and 2021

According to the report, exports of services from Spain to Morocco decreased by 29.3% in 2021, from 1,263 million euros in 2019 to 892 million. This decline is due mainly to the fall in tourism activity, said the same source.

On the Moroccan side, exports related to the tertiary sector have also suffered a downward trend, this decline is estimated at 26.5%, or 634 million euros. 

While in 2019 tourism accounted for 61.7% of the value of exports, the sector occupies a less consistent place, being relegated to third place (23.2%) after transport (33.8%) and business services (31%). As for Spanish companies exporting to Morocco, their number has almost doubled from 1,758 in 2019 to 2,940 in 2021, while the number of importing companies has increased from 1,208 to 1,566, dissects the report.

At the end of this period 2019-2021, tourist spending by Moroccans in Spain, increased from 780 to 206 million, and Spaniards in Morocco, which also increased from 620 to 297 million.

As for Spanish business opportunities in Morocco, the report lists mainly maritime and land freight transport, water infrastructure projects and those for energy facilities.

Regarding leisure and beach tourism, concentrated on the Costa del Sol, the newly published diagnosis concludes that this niche remains interesting because of the high average expenditure per tourist, as well as the impact of “educational and business tourism.
