Ksar El Kebir: the consumption of adulterated alcohol causes 19 deaths

On September 27, more than thirty people aged between 35 and 50 years were hospitalized in critical condition following the consumption of adulterated alcohol, and two of them were still in intensive care. The victims suffered from headaches, vomiting, stomach cramps and red eyes, said a chief nurse at the hospital in Ksar El Kebir.

The Moroccan Association for the Protection of Consumers and the Defense of Consumer Rights in Ksar El-Kebir said the tragedy caused the death of at least 15 people, not counting those in critical condition. The death toll rose on Wednesday to 19, a local health ministry official said. The bodies were transferred to a hospital in Tangier, for “autopsy to clarify the causes of death,” he added.

To this end, the association “Consumer Protection” explained that the victims had acquired the adulterated beverages in a liquor store not approved. Following the tragedy, the same association called on local authorities and the control committee to inspect and monitor closely the stores that sell alcohol, while taking the legal measures applicable against the owners of stores that do not have authorization to sell these substances.

Thus, during the search of the incriminated business, the investigators seized nearly 50 liters of alcohol of the same type. It should be noted that this is not the first time that such a drama occurs in Morocco. In July 2021, twenty people died after consuming adulterated alcohol purchased from a “guerrab” (illegal seller) in Oujda.
