More and more Moroccans entering the Schengen area via Turkey are applying for asylum in Switzerland. In the period from January to March, 497 people have requested asylum in the country, according to statistics from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) reported by the international press.

While Switzerland has seen an explosion of asylum applications on its territory, an increase of 12.6% in March compared to February, the increase in applications from Moroccans is particularly clear, according to the same source, because in 2022, a total of 44 asylum applications per month on average were made, compared to 166 applications in March of the current year.

Morocco now occupies the 4th place among the first countries whose nationals opt for asylum in Switzerland, just after Turkey (371 applications), Afghanistan (368 applications), Eritrea (198 applications), followed by Algeria with a total of 108 applications, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

In addition, SEM data reveals that of a total of 1,893 applications submitted in March, 1,429 of them were primary applications. Among the top countries of origin of primary applications in March 2023 was Morocco with 165 applications.

In addition, MES reported that it processed a total of 2,307 asylum applications during the past month, of which 662 were rejected, 542 people were granted asylum, and 690 were temporarily accepted in first-level processing.

During the same period, 1,531 people, including Moroccans, left Switzerland or returned to their country of origin or to a third country, while 2,215 people were granted protection status S in federal asylum centers. On the other hand, 50 persons seeking protection were refused this status because they did not meet the criteria set by the country.
