Automobile: Tough competition between Rabat and Pretoria

With 700,000 vehicles manufactured last year and a production capacity now at one million per year, Morocco is widening the gap with its African competitors, including its direct competitor, South Africa, which is satisfied with 400,000 vehicles per year. In addition, as regards the rate of local integration, the kingdom is at 64%, against 50% in South Africa, where the automotive sector contributes to 4% of GDP. Morocco’s lead is also confirmed in the manufacture of electric vehicles, a segment in which it is almost alone on the continent for the moment. How is Morocco strengthening its lead in the automotive industry and what are the weaknesses of the South African competitor?
