New Variant of Coronavirus Appears in South Africa

Health authorities in South Africa have revealed the existence of a new variant of the Coronavirus in the country.

Zweli Mkhize, the minister of health, said Friday night in a televised speech that the new variant is what was previously called “the 501.V2 variant”. It was discovered during a genetic screening of doses taken from different prefectures. It is not yet clear whether this new variant is resistant to vaccines or not.

So far, 892,813 people have been infected with Covid-19 in South Africa, and 24,000 people have died after infection.

The government imposed restrictions in the country to control the spread of the virus, and then renewed these measures after a small relief during the vacation period.

The British authorities informed the WHO of the existence of a variant of the virus in Great Britain.

The WHO states in this regard that the variants of the virus are not different from the original virus in their contamination and intensity.
