Nurses’ and health technicians’ strike: 80% participation nationwide, says union

Opposed to the agreement that had been signed between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and several unions, the independent union of nurses and health technicians had called for a 72-hour national strike, starting on 2 March.

According to an estimate provided by the union, more than 80% of nurses participated in the strike nationwide. This rate of participation also concerned the total number of nursing staff in several regions. In addition, 4,500 people attended a sit-in in front of the Ministry of Health on 3 and 4 March.

The agreement signed on Thursday 24 February between the government and several representative unions, in the context of social dialogue, does not, according to the independent union of nurses and health technicians, meet their technical and financial demands, and does not take into consideration the sacrifices they have made in the performance of their profession, throughout the last few years, and especially since the beginning of the pandemic.

In addition, the nurses and health technicians represented by this union also denounce the fact that they were excluded from the negotiations that took place with the government within the framework of social dialogue and deplore a lack of human resources.

Social dialogue: public sector doctors suspend their protest movement

The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, presided over the signing ceremony of an agreement between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and all the trade unions representing the sector in Rabat on Thursday 24 February 2022.

The sectoral social dialogue with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection had resulted in an agreement on several points, including promotion and an increase in the occupational risk allowance for administrative staff and health technicians.

This agreement also provides for the continuation of this dialogue on other issues that arise for this category of health care personnel, so that they adhere to the great royal project initiated on generalised medical coverage.
