Dismantling of a terrorist cell in Tangier: the latest revelations of the BCIJ

The technical and scientific expertises carried out on all the material and products seized, following the defeat of an imminent terrorist plan and the dismantling of an extremist cell affiliated to “Daech” operating in the city of Tangier, revealed that they enter, after their mixing, in the preparation and manufacture of explosive devices, said, Sunday evening, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) under the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

As part of the investigation conducted by the BCIJ following the foiling, on October 6, of an imminent terrorist plan and the dismantling of an extremist cell affiliated to “Daech” operating in the city of Tangier The National Laboratory of Scientific and Technical Police at the Institute of Forensic Sciences of the National Security carried out a technical and scientific expertise to analyze and examine the nature and uses of chemical products and samples seized in this case, the same source said in a statement.

Thus, the technical and scientific expertises carried out on all the material and products seized revealed that they are used, after their mixing, in the preparation and manufacture of explosive devices, including two cans of sulfur considered as a reducing and flammable product and four bottles of hydrochloric acid with high acidity, used as a chemical catalyst during the manufacture of some explosive products, in addition to a three-liter can of concentrated bleach containing sodium hypochlorite, the statement said.

The technical investigations also examined the use of a set of metallic and electrical products seized from one of the members of this terrorist cell, including two kilograms of nails over 3 cm long, which can be used as projectiles when placed inside explosive devices, as well as electrical circuits consisting of copper wires and lamps connected to switches and small batteries, which are part of the device used to trigger the detonation, in addition to a high-voltage halogen bulb, which is used as a spark that causes the explosion when its protective glass is broken and exposed to high voltage, according to the BCIJ.

The results of these scientific and technical expertises have been included in a detailed expert report made available to the BCIJ to support the judicial investigation procedures conducted under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office, in charge of terrorism cases, the same source concluded.
